Pregnancy Week 13
At last, you’re gonna get some help!
Last week of the first trimester! Hopefully you are feeling a little better as the placenta takes over the maintenance for keeping your baby growing! You may notice that you are growing a little everyday and clothes are starting to feel the pinch!
Attached to the baby via the umbilical cord and you in the lining of your womb the placenta serves to provide your baby with all of the nutrients that it needs and to take away all of the waste products that baby produces. It includes the membranes (called the Amnion and the Chorion) which are basically the sack around the baby and the cotyledons form the fleshy part of the structure and they do all the hard work. (You don’t need to remember all this – just a bit of trivia for you!)
Your baby is about the size of a peach and is bopping around all over their womb! You won’t really feel these movements yet but as the weeks go by you will be able to feel those kicks and punches!
Your little lady has teeth, fingerprints and its vocal cords are fully formed! Baby has been busy! If you have kept your pregnancy a secret you are probably thinking about announcing your new family member. If you are one of the lucky ones that have remained unchanged in size you may even decided to keep your big secret to yourself!
All about you…
For the past few weeks you have probably felt pretty tired, sick and sluggish. Hopefully this week should mark the start of a respite period where you feel a new burst of energy! Now may be the time you feel able to pick up your exercise regime again which is good for you both. Take it easy if you have had a few weeks break – you don’t want to overdo it!
If you feel that you want to make love you may experience a little “spotting” afterwards which isn’t usually a cause for alarm however, you may want to get this checked if it occurs.
For those having twins or even triplets the pregnancy symptoms are likely to continue a little longer. Hang in there! You are growing two people which is no mean feat!
You are likely to be able to feel your uterus above your pubic bone and may have had to adjust your sleeping position if you are used to sleeping on your front!
A final thing to be aware of at this point is your calorie intake! Although it is tempting to “eat for two!” you really don’t need to! It is recommended that weight gain is slow and steady throughout your pregnancy and if you were within a healthy weight range to start with the recommended gain is no more than 35lb (maximum!)
